Students
ARL has traditionally employed a large number of graduate and undergraduate students. The number varies throughout the year, peaking during the summer when as many as 150 students are involved in the research program. Because of the nature of the research program and its sponsorship, ARL requires that its student employees be U.S. citizens.

The academic disciplines of the students mirror those of the research staff, with concentration in engineering, computer science, and physics.

The histogram below shows a snapshot of the distribution of cumulative GPAs for our 95 undergraduate students as of the spring semester of 2002. Forty percent of the students are maintaining a GPA above 3.5, and 70% are above 3.0, despite the challenging academic load and the additional hours spent at ARL. They are clearly a talented group of students.

histogram indicates student GPAsOur student researchers benefit the projects they work on by providing a fresh perspective. They in turn benefit by virtue of the experience they gain from working in an applied research environment. Our sponsors are generally appreciative of the opportunity to expose such quality students to DoD sponsored research. A significant fraction of the students hold professional positions at ARL following graduation, and many go on to successful careers in academia, industry, and government laboratories.
