Science & Engineering Apprenticeship Program

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

The S & E Apprenticeship Program provides an opportunity for participating students to work closely with ARL staff in summer-long research projects. Other activities within the program are designed to show students the differen types of research done at ARL:UT. These activities include "Lunch and Learn" presentations from ARL staff and students, a tour of ARL's Lake Travis Test Station, as well as a chance for the students to showcase their research through technical reports and poster presentations. See the 2011 Summer Program participants.

Lunch and Learn Seminars

The Lunch and Learn Seminars allow ARL:UT scientists and engineers to highlight different areas of research and gives students an idea of the type of work that can be done depending on the type of career they choose to pursue.

Technical Reports and Poster Presentations

At the end of the apprenticeship, all the students prepare poster session presentations and short technical papers summarizing their project results. These written summaries are combined into a laboratory report which is distributed to the Office of Naval Research, The Applied Physics Laboratory at The University of Washington, the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University, the Marine Physical Laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California, the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University, and the Vice President for Research at The University of Texas at Austin, among others. The summaries are edited only lightly in order to preserve the style and freshness of the students. View 2011 Award Winners and their abstracts.

LTTS Tour

Each summer, participating students take a field trip to the Lake Travis Test Station (LTTS). Students get a tour of the facility and an explanation of the type of work ARL: UT does on Lake Travis.
