Fellowship Description

The Signal and Information Sciences Laboratory (SISL) of the Applied Research Laboratories, The University of Texas at Austin (ARL:UT) is pleased to invite applications for a postdoctoral fellowship position. The SISL remote sensing group has an active portfolio with respect to research and development in the areas of airborne and space-based altimetry for geospatial application and discovery. Current efforts focus specifically on NASA’s Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite -2 (ICESat-2) mission that launched in 2018 and carries a unique lidar instrument for global elevation measurements. The Geospatial Laser Applications and Measurements (GLAM) group at ARL provides mission support in many ways including operational data production, science team organization, terrestrial ecology studies and bathymetry product development. This fellowship will allow the individual an opportunity to engage with the existing efforts of the GLAM team, realize new applications for these global data, form enhanced scientific studies for multi-instrument scenarios, and explore Earth climate processes through in situ and remote sensing techniques. The position is also poised for collaboration with the Center for Space Research and the broader Aerospace Engineering department at the University with opportunities for research growth, academic engagement and publications.

Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. in engineering or the natural sciences. Applicant must have received his or her Ph.D. within the last three years in order to be eligible. Individuals with research experience in altimetry, geodesy, signal processing, big data analysis and geospatial applications are preferred but all candidates will be considered. A familiarity with remote sensing hardware is also desired in addition to proven capabilities with computational development. The successful applicant should demonstrate strong potential as an independent researcher and small team collaborator. A willingness to work with undergraduate and graduate researchers is also advantageous.

The appointment is contingent upon the completion of the requirements for a Ph.D. and will be for an initial period of one year with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. Outstanding recipients may be considered for staff positions at the completion of their appointment. The applicant must be a U.S. Citizen: subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.

Salary Range: will be determined by experience and qualifications. Excellent fringe benefits.
